Nail Polish Review - Essie Neon 2013 Collection

26 May 2013

Hey everyone! As I had mentioned earlier this month, I received two collections from essie... the Summer 2013 Collection and the new Neon 2013 Collection!
Disclaimer: All polishes used in this post were provided to me as a PR sample.

Here's a quick round up of all the colours in this collection before we dive in to the nitty gritty!

"There's no place like the boom boom room to catch saturday disco fever. Cruise through the velvet ropes in eye-catching, bold colour that cries out, bouncer, it's me and head for a VIP table with bottle service. Tonight's the night to cut loose and shake your $$ maker. So, c'mon, DJ play that song - all night long."

essies pro tips:
Step 1: first apply one coat of base coat then a coat of blanc to turn up the bright
Step 2: apply 2 coats of your fave neon shade
Step 3: make it pop with one coat of good to go top coat

First up, we have bottle service, a scorching neon fuchsia...

Name: bottle service  |  Colour: Neon fuchsia  |  Finish: Neon-creme with a waxy matte finish  |  # of Coats: 2 coats over 1 coat of white  |  Rating: 8/10

Application: The formula is pretty sheer so it requires 2 coats for full opacity. It does need the coat of white as a base to play up the neon brightness! As seen in the little nail wheel swatch, it has a waxy, satin finish before the top coat.

Comments: You can't see it in the pictures, but this colour is much brighter in person. It is a pretty basic shade of pink though so its a staple neon that everyone should have! I liked the colour and formula for this polish.

Next we have bouncer, it's me, a vivid blue velvet...

Name: bouncer, it's me  |  Colour: Cobalt blue  |  Finish: Creme with a waxy matte finish  |  # of Coats: 2 coats over 1 coat of white  |  Rating: 9/10

Application: The formula was very gel-like and thin but 2 coats over the white brings it to full opacity.

Comments: I really liked the waxy finish as this reminded me of another essie polish, butler please. However, it took forever to try and therefore would definitely benefit from a fast drying top coat. Even though this is not a traditional neon colour, I really liked it as it was bright and fun and different from anything else I own.

Next up we have saturday disco fever, a superhot fire coral...although I don't think its coral, its more orange

Name: saturday disco fever  |  Colour: Neon orange  |  Finish: Neon-creme with a waxy matte finish  |  # of Coats: 2 over 1 coat of white  |  Rating: 8/10

Application: The formula and application was very similar to bottle service. It was sheer and applied smooth. 2 coats was perfect to give it the opacity seen in the pictures.

Comments: This is a traditional neon colour and it was much much brighter in person than in the pictures! It is a really fun for the summer and would look great on a pedicure. essie describes the colour as a coral, but it is definitely an orange... a bright bright bright orange!

Next up we have shake your $$ maker, an ambitious electric green...

Name: shake your $$ maker  |  Colour: Emerald green  |  Finish: Creme with a waxy matte finish  |  # of Coats: 2 coats over 1 coat of white  |  Rating: 5/10

Application: The formula for this polish was very sheer and very very streaky! As you can see from the picture that it is still streaky and does not provide even coverage even after 2 coats. On top of that, it was taking forever to dry!

Comments: As difficult as the formula was and how it is not a traditional neon colour,  the colour is just so gorgeous! I may still use this for nail art or occasionally stick it out with the tough formula and add a fast drying top coat... we'll see!

Next up we have boom boom room, an ultra-bright party pink...

Name: boom boom room  |  Colour: bubblegum, baby pink  |  Finish: Creme  |  # of Coats: 2 over 1 coat of white  |  Rating: 10/10

Application: The formula for this polish was absolutely perfect! It could have even worked with just 1 coat. It could have also worked without the coat of white underneath.

Comments: The colour looks like its blending into my skin colour but it was bright, fresh and my personal favourite from this entire collection. This is not a traditional neon colour, and doesn't really look neon... I guess it fits into this collection because of how bright it is.

And lastly, we have DJ play that song, a beautiful plum...

Name: DJ play that song  |  Colour: Plum  |  Finish: Creme with a waxy matte finish  |  # of Coats: 2 over 1 coat of white  |  Rating: 7/10

Application: The formula was a little tricky and took forever to dry as well! I applied top coat to make it dry faster. It was sheer on the first coat but it is opaque on the second coat.

Comments: I am loving this great colour... a purple I actually love! I really love both finishes but I just hated how long it took to dry without the top coat. I don't have a purple like this in my collection so I am excited to wear this on my toes this summer!

Overall, there are some great colours in this collection and some that are not traditionally neon... but I think the collection does have a great neon vibe and works well together as a whole. My personal favourite is definitely boom boom room but bouncer, it's me is also a great second place! But then again, I love my blues!

Hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts on this new essie Neon 2013 Collection. Keep a look out for some nail art ideas using this collection! And I'd love to know which colours were your favourite!
